What You’ll Need:
- The microBIOMETER® Starter Kit, comprising:
- 10 test pouches
- Soil extraction shaker
- Calibration card
- A smartphone with the microBIOMETER® app installed (compatible with iOS and Android)
- A small soil sample (approximately a teaspoon)
- Clean water
Preparation:
- Download the App: Ensure the microBIOMETER® app is installed on your smartphone. Create an account or log in to track and analyze your soil health data effectively.
- Collect Soil Sample: Gather a small soil sample from the area you wish to test using a garden trowel or spoon. Aim for about a teaspoon of soil from the top 2-3 inches of the ground. Remove any large debris, stones, or roots.
- Prepare Your Workspace: Set up a clean, flat surface for your work area. Lay out all kit components for easy access.
Conducting the Test:
- Add Soil to Test Pouch: Open one test pouch and transfer your soil sample into it using the provided spoon or a clean tool.
- Add Water: Fill the soil extraction shaker with clean water up to the indicated line. Pour this water into the test pouch containing the soil.
- Shake the Mixture: Seal the test pouch securely and shake it vigorously for 20 seconds. This action thoroughly mixes the soil with the water, extracting microbes into the solution.
- Let the Pouch Settle: Allow the pouch to rest for a minute, allowing soil particles to settle at the bottom. This settling is essential for accurate testing.
- Calibrate and Test: Open the microBIOMETER® app and initiate a new test. Follow the app’s instructions to use the calibration card and prepare for reading. Capture a photo of the test pouch against the calibration card background as directed by the app.
- Analyze Results: Once the photo is captured, the app will analyze the microbial biomass based on the colorimetric scale and provide results within seconds.
After the Test:
- Review and Record: Examine the results displayed on the app, providing an estimate of the microbial biomass in your soil sample. Save these results in the app to track changes over time or compare different soil samples.
- Dispose of Materials Properly: After completing the test, dispose of the used test pouch and any remaining soil or water according to local regulations.
- Plan Your Next Steps: Based on the results, consider adjustments to improve soil health, such as fertilization, composting, or watering practices
Tips for Accurate Testing:
- Test multiple samples from different areas for a comprehensive view of soil health.
- Conduct tests regularly, such as at the beginning and end of growing seasons, to monitor changes over time.
- Compare results after making adjustments to soil management practices to gauge effectiveness.
